Frequently Asked Questions

How Easy Is it to Handle Bromothane™?
What Equipment Is Required?

Bromothane™ solvents are very easy to handle and almost no special equipment is required. All you need is a simple vapor degreaser.

Vapor degreasers are cleaning machines which automatically boil and then re-distill the solvent in one fast, simple and easy process. This proven technology has been on the market since the 1930s. Many companies make these machines. They are relatively inexpensive to buy and operate, especially when compared to aqueous systems. For example, small tabletop units can be purchased for under US$10,000 while even the largest off-the-shelf system with every whistle and bell barely hits US$100,000.

In terms of other equipment, fume hoods, vapor extraction systems and ventilation systems usually are not required with Bromothane™. Gloves and eye protection are strongly recommended. For larger installations, drum pumps and drum moving gear are recommended.

• Bromothane™ Vapors Are Controlled in Engineered Vapor Degreasers •

While other manufacturers have different opinions, it is the policy of MicroCare that using Bromothane™ as a cold cleaner or in manual cleaning operations will not be acceptable. This includes aerosols, small trays, dip tanks and open baths. Bench top dipping and brushing applications are not endorsed due to the risk of higher than recommended worker exposures because the solvent evaporates quickly in an uncovered, uncontrolled environment. Such uncontrolled evaporation can cause worker exposures to exceed the maximum recommended value of 10 ppm.

So you should understand that Bromothane™ solvents will be offered for use only in engineered cleaning systems, such as vapor degreasers, to assure compliance with worker exposure limits. MicroCare has designed a no-cost “first fill” training program which is offered to all Bromothane users. The program includes training and a comprehensive checklist to ensure the proper procedures are followed. In addition, all Bromothane users are required to annually conduct a simple workplace exposure test with air-monitoring badges assure worker safety.
